2003
The story begins! We set up a family-owned company, Henfield Hire Ltd, to buy the operations of a car and van hire operation called ‘Henfield Hire’ in Horsham, West Sussex (yes, that’s where the ‘Henfield Storage’ name came from!). We initially focused on vehicle rental and managed to double the size of the business to around 200 vehicles. Nora, our longest-serving team member, joined us and we’re delighted to say is still with us today.
2005
London calling… We’d been experimenting with online adverts for a little while, and we realised that London storage prices were about 7x higher than ours (yep, we’re not kidding), so we tried advertising online in London to get customers to store in Horsham where we had a big empty warehouse. We had a fleet of rental vans and colleagues who were usually quiet during the week – so we all chipped in to help move customers down to Horsham. In this year Tracy, who is now the Horsham branch manager, joined the team.
2007
Soon enough, we were pretty full in Horsham (and that was even after fitting out a lot more space!), so we started looking for another site in North London. Why there? Well, it was the furthest part of London away from Horsham and also the hardest to get to!
2008
We found and took on our Staples Corner site in Cricklewood. Again, we filled it very quickly and started looking for another site in South London. We found a good building which had been a Curry Motors garage and set to work converting it to a storage facility. In this year, Ben, who now runs our marketing efforts, joined the team
2010
Our Wimbledon store opened and with very aggressive pricing (that’s part of the reason our customers love us!) we had lots of extremely happy customers very quickly. With a successful formula, we started looking for another site in East or Central London. Mash and Peter joined the team – Mash manages our Brighton store and Peter manages the Southwark store to this day. One of the things we’re incredibly proud of is our culture and just how long our staff stay with us – not to mention our customers!
2011
We found and opened our Southwark store, in Bermondsey. Just eighteen months later, in 2013, we were full, so we expanded into another part of the site.
2013
Things are going really well now – and we thought we could take a bit of a risk and open another site in West London alongside the Bermondsey expansion. We took on a really big unit in Chiswick and filled it as quickly as the Southwark site!
2014
Customer satisfaction really is at the heart of what we do here at Henfield. So, to get a better understanding of you, our clients, we introduced Feefo into our website and operations. Wow! What an impact! We started to get a clearer vision of what we were doing differently from our competitors and why our customers rated us so highly. Ollie, who manages our Staples Corner store, joined the business then, too!
2015
Life got in the way… We were thinking of taking on another site when the 2015 General Election and 2016 Brexit referendum landed – causing a great deal of uncertainty. We also realised that the industry was becoming more competitive – so we decided to hunker down and focus on our customers while political and economic issues got resolved by the powers that be (mind you, it took a lot longer than we anticipated!)
2016
Welcome to the new faces! Darren, our Operations Manager, joined us, as did Ryan, the manager of the Chiswick store.
2017
After the tragic events at Grenfell Tower, we played our part in giving back to the community affected. We transported and stored huge amounts of goods and donations for the victims. This was, of course, a desperately sad time – but it was nice to be able to help, even just a little.
2018
After much planning and preparation we were happy and proud to launch our brand new storage service – Click+Store. It proved to be an instant hit with customers, who love the convenience of being able to get their things stored without having to leave home. That convenience, alongside our traditional low prices, has meant that its popularity has grown quickly and it is now an important part of the storage services we offer. In this year Ben, who is now the Wimbledon branch manager, joined us.
2020
Life got in the way, again… After COVID-19 hit, we refocused our operations and decided to stop running our vehicle rental business. On a more positive note, we achieved Feefo ‘platinum’ status for consistently fantastic service (5.0 out of 5.0 2,000+ reviews!), which we’ve maintained ever since. Our Trustpilot reviews also took-off in a big way! We also finally found another storage site that we liked in Hollingbury, Brighton. We worked closely with our new friends at Hanbury Properties to make a plan to refurbish what used to be the print works for the Brighton Argus.
2021
It took us around 9 months to upgrade the Brighton site – and we were very proud of our efforts to open in September 2021. After that, who knows! The Henfield Storage story continues – and we’d love for you to be a part of it.
